Every party has that moment. Guests are talking, the food is out, and nobody is thinking about requesting a song right now. That is when the music must not stop – and that is when my auto DJ goes to work.

And when nobody is requesting anything, my auto DJ steps in. It favours tracks that actually work at real parties, rather than the next best thing carrying the right label. I spent a long time on this one, and I am rather proud of how well it now catches the tone of an evening.

No Christmas songs in July

Here is a case everyone recognises. Some tracks sit in the music catalogue filed neatly under pop – and are unmistakably Christmas songs. My auto DJ spots that kind of occasion music and leaves it alone. The same goes for everything else rarely meant for a party: children's songs, audiobooks, karaoke versions.

With one deliberate exception, and it matters to me. If your party actually wants that music, it gets it. Set a festive direction, or let your guests request those songs, and it stops holding back. A Christmas party stays a Christmas party.

What you need to do: nothing

There is no new switch, no setting to hunt for, nothing to update on events you have already created. It is simply there – whether my auto DJ follows the flow of the evening or a genre you picked yourself.

And the most important part stays exactly as it is: your guests come first. The auto DJ is the bridge, never the headliner. The moment someone requests a song, it steps aside.

Music has shaped my whole life, and few things please me more than the right song at the right moment. That is why this is one of the things I most enjoy keeping at.
